Small, but nice: Holiday region Bergün-Filisur

The neighbouring municipalities of the original Albula Valley, Bergün and Filisur, jointly form a beautiful holiday region. This is the home of the world-famous Landwasser viaduct, the outstanding feature of the equally renowned Albula line of the Rhaetian Railway, with its paradise for hiking, mountain-biking and sledging and its small but highly attractive winter sports region.

The wild Albula Valley, which takes its name from the river flowing through it, is a uniquely fascinating combination of craggy high-altitude landscapes, towering mountain gorges and lush green lowlands. The region offers pure relaxation, along with many of the elements of a perfect holiday for anyone with a taste for outdoor sport and adventure. Its natural attractions cater to both types of holidaymaker, and the local landscapes – now with UNESCO World Heritage status – are just made for the would-be explorer. The long list of available activities around Bergün and Filisur includes something for everyone.

Attractive in summer and winter alike

The Bergün Filisur area is a famous sledging centre. The Preda-Bergün and Darlux-Bergün sledging runs offer such enjoyment to enthusiasts from all over the world that this winter sports area on the Albula Pass has been dubbed “the sledgers’ Mecca”. The fun is not restricted to sledgers however, as Piz Darlux – slightly higher up the mountains – is a compact but highly attractive paradise for skiers and snowboarders. Anyone visiting the valley for the first time – especially if accompanied by children – is recommended to start off on the nursery slopes of the Tect/Zinols skiing area right next to Bergün village. Facilities designed to ward off any hint of boredom include a beautifully maintained winter hiking route, a cross-country skiing route, a natural ice rink and the thermal baths at Alvaneu. And visitors who set their sights a little further off will be pleased to learn that the central location of Bergün Filisur means that Davos, Lenzerheide and the Engadin region are all practically on the doorstep.

Bergün and Filisur make an ideal base for a large number of hiking routes during the summer season. One of the region’s highlights in this respect is the so-called Kesch Trek. The route through the mountainous terrain of Graubünden lets walkers leave their everyday cares in the valley far below. This four-day trek, which covers the route between the Flüela and Albula passes, offers a chance to experience the peaceful and spectacular world of the high Alps.
The alternative: follow the Railway Experience Walk that runs from Preda to Bergün and onwards to Filisur, closely shadowing the route marked by the RhB’s railway infrastructure and along a section of line with UNESCO World Heritage status – with uniquely thrilling views guarranteed. The Railway Museum in Albula is an ideal destination for anyone wishing to know more about how the RhB came into being and what makes it tick, while those with cultural or artistic interests can enjoy a range of concerts and other entertainment with local and international artists and performers, traditional village markets or stage shows at the region’s forty-plus venues and events.
